Description
You need to balance the ‘front end’ of the NZC with the AOs of the social sciences in a way that is effective for learning, but also meets the specific goals and values of the school/kura, whānau and wider community. Choosing which contexts to explore the big ideas and significant learning of the social sciences through, which year level to address these in and how to assess students’ conceptual understandings and the processes and skills of social sciences is complex.
We know that there have been few recent PLD opportunities that focus on supporting you in the design of learning programmes in the social sciences learning area and we have created this course for you in order to address your specific needs as a middle leader.
Our two days together will be in the beautiful space of the Tiakiwai Conference Centre, in the heart of the National Library, home to the taonga of He Tohu which exhibits He Whakapuntanga, Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the Women’s Suffrage Petition.
Workshops will include:
Preparing for the compulsory Aotearoa histories curriculum
Assessing progression in junior social studies (including primary and intermediate schools)
Leading a diverse Social Science Department
Ensuring social studies achievement objectives are being met in integrated curriculum designs
Social Inquiry for Social Action - with older learners & younger learners
Ensuring a culturally competent Social Science curriculum
Supporting teachers to feel confident teaching controversial issues
